Dean Shulman was my friend and a founder of Safety And Health Foundation before his untimely death five years ago.

Wendy Martinez was a well-known runner who ran our half marathon in 2015 and continued to progress as a runner until Wednesday, September 19, 2018, when she was killed by an attacker while running near Logan Circle.

We dearly remember both.

In memory of Dean, each year from each of our 3 races, we donate $8000 to Dean's favorite charity, Buy A Brick Foundation (www.buyabrickfoundation.org), building health clinics, hospitals, and schools in Zimbabwe (formerly Rhodesia). Those donations total $24,000 each year, and last year, when we topped $150,000 in total donated to Buy A Brick Foundation, and they named a wing of their hospital "Safety And Health Foundation clinic"

In memory of Wendy, in August 2019, Safety And Health Foundation donated $2000 from the proceeds of our marathon & half to THE WENDY MARTINEZ LEGACY PROJECT (TWMLP). Wendy previously participated in SHF events, and participating in this race on Saturday is a beautiful way to honor her life after the first anniversary of her passing.

Leaders of TWMLP will be on hand staffing an exhibit table on Saturday at the race,

For more information about the work of TWMLP and the life and legacy of Wendy Martinez, please visit www.wendyslegacy.org

We offer three convenient packet pick-ups:

o Packet Assembly: Help us assemble bib numbers and goodie bags, and get your bib number, t-shirt, and goodie bag early on Thursday, October 3, 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM, Walter Reed Community Center, 2909 16th Street South, Arlington VA 22204 (703-228-0935). Park free in front or behind the building

o Pre-race packet pickup: Friday, October 4, 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM, Pacers Running Store, 3100 Clarendon Boulevard, Arlington VA, across street from Clarendon Metro. Park free for 90 minutes underneath Trader Joe's (enter parking area at 1200 North Garfield Street), Then go upstairs to get your parking coupon validated. Buy something while you're there!

o Race-day packet pickup: Saturday, October 5, 7:15 AM to 8:45 AM -- on-site at Fletcher's Cove, 4940 Canal Road NW, Washington DC 20007, two miles west of Key Bridge, one mile east of Chain Bridge. From the east (Georgetown), arrive via Canal Road. Follow the stone wall from Key Bridge to the first break in the wall, also the first stoplight west of Foxhall Road. Enter to the left down a ramp to free parking for 85 cars.

Please do not park in front of the big white Abner Cloud House, a national historical site, open to the public as a museum after 12:00 noon on Saturdays. Once the upper parking lot is full stay to your right and enter the tunnel that goes under the canal and towpath and brings you to free parking for about 200 cars.

If you drive from the west -- past Chain Bridge on Canal Road -- the hairpin turn down to Fletcher's Cove is dangerous. Instead, turn left at the stoplight to go up Reservoir Road for free parking there, or make a safe U-turn, go back down to Canal Road, and cross into the ramp down to Fletcher's Cove. U.S. Park Police serve and protect at that intersection.

Simultaneous with our race, our good friends at Park Run 5K starting at 9:05 AM and head east -- the opposite direction -- unrelated to our marathon, but they do occupy some parking spaces

On Saturday morning, if all available parking at Fletcher's Cove is taken (unlikely), or if you don't mind a short walk before and after your race, you can find more free parking up Reservoir Road at The River School, on W Street, Bending Lane, Hutchins Place, or MacArthur Boulevard.

If you drive to the race, please lock your personal belongings in your car.

If you signed up to take our pre-paid Red Top Cab from Key Bridge Marriott, 1401 Lee Highway, Arlington VA 22204, departing at 7:00 AM, arriving at Fletcher's Cove around 7:20 AM, we send additional instructions to you. You may still sign up for Red Top Cab via our web page

    www.safetyandhealthfoundation.org/marathon/index2.php

or at pre-race packet pick-up. Round trip is $10.00 till Thursday at midnight, $15.00 after Thursday at midnight.

If you take the cab or other means of transportation, we offer secure storage of personal belongings behind the race-day registration desk. Please place your stuff in a white plastic bag, which we provide, or in your green goodie bag from ACE Physical Therapy, and please write your bib number on the outside of the bag.

Your friends may register late during pre-race packet pick-up

You may pick up someone else's bib number and packet if you bring along a signed note or a printed e-mail message from your friend

If you want to change your start time or distance, you MUST inform the registrar when you pick up your bib number on Thursday, Friday, or Saturday, but it's WAY better if you let us know now using the change form above.

We also have a change chart on the timing table at the start / finish line. No, you can't run a 1:50 marathon. We'll know it's a half marathon. ;-)

Please be sure to wear your bib number visibly on the front of your shirt at all times during the race, not on your back, not on your sleeve, and please do NOT remove the name tag at the bottom of your bib number -- we collect those tags at the finish line, that's how we score the race -- not using electronic chips.

As quickly as possible after the 8:00 AM marathon finishers and the 9:00 AM half marathon finishers, we present awards, including $10 cards from Pacers Running Stores and Trader Joe's, $20 cards from Falls Road Running Store in Baltimore, SHF warm woolly hats, SHF shatterproof sunglasses, and copies of my book "The Man Who Stole The Sun" about 3 courageous marathon runners and first responders who who must overcome a terrorist threat on the night before Marine Corps Marathon.

Our marathon/half on Saturday is in the story line!

Look out, Catniss Everdeen and Hermione Granger -- here comes DONNI LOWE!

If you want to buy an author-graphed copy of the book ($10.00 in person, $14.00 by mail) to pick up at packet pick-up, please let me know (703-505-3567) -- write to ARLINGTONSUNRISE@GMAIL.COM ASAP so I can print a copy for you. It's a thrilling story of love, devotion, betrayal, courage, and triumph with plenty of twists and turns. Along the way, you'll learn about quantum mechanics and theoretical astrophysics -- very small and very big stuff!

At packet pick-up on Friday and Saturday, you may sample three cannabidiol (CBD) products by ClearSafe Labs www.clearsafelabs.com

Just a drop will do you! Virtually zero THC exists in commercial CBD product, so no psychoactive effects -- but users report that CBD reduces anxiety, sleeplessness, and muscle / bone soreness. See (BD) for yourself on Friday or Saturday.

We look forward to welcoming you this week!
